Solutions for Polarisation Measurement
Axometrics: High-Quality Vibration Decoupling for Five-Axis Microscope Systems
Project Overview
Key Facts
- Level reset accuracy better than ±0.01 mm
Background
Axometrics Inc., USA, is a leading global provider of Mueller matrix measurement systems used to determine the polarisation properties of materials and optical components.
Headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama, the company introduced its Mueller matrix measurement system to the market in 2005.
Today, Axometrics provides polarisation testing solutions for a wide range of applications, including:
- Flat-panel displays
- Heart valves
- Smartphone lenses
- Optical components
- Advanced manufacturing applications
Axometrics approached Bilz Vibration Technology, Inc. USA in Cleveland with a highly specialised vibration isolation requirement.
The Challenge
The LCD production machine is a high-tech system used for the production and inspection of liquid crystal displays.
The major technical challenge was that the machine uses a five-axis microscope system to measure the three-dimensional geometry of liquid crystal molecules within individual pixels of an 8K LCD display.
These machines are used on some of the world’s largest LCD production lines.
Axometrics required a high-quality vibration decoupling system to protect the integrated microscope from external vibrations.
Effective vibration isolation was essential to achieve:
- High-resolution inspection
- Stable microscope operation
- Accurate measurement results
- Vibration-free measurement conditions
- Reliable and repeatable performance
Another important requirement was that the vibration isolation solution had to be repeatable and suitable for trouble-free installation at future production sites.
The Solution
Bilz developed a customized solution using six standard BiAir® 3-ED/HE membrane air spring isolators.
A BiAir® membrane air spring isolator is manufactured from machined aluminium or cast aluminium.
Inside the isolator, the compressed air volume is enclosed by a thin, flexible and pressure-resistant rolling membrane.
The piston is supported by the diaphragm and moves within the enclosed air volume.
This design enables highly effective vibration isolation and provides stable support for highly sensitive equipment.
For Axometrics, another important advantage was the surface finish.
The powder-coated design makes the vibration isolation system suitable for use in clean-room environments, which is an essential requirement for advanced LCD manufacturing and inspection applications.
Results / Highlight
The vibration-isolated mounting of highly sensitive and extremely heavy high-tech equipment is one of Bilz’s key areas of expertise.
