Only Three Weeks from Planning to Commissioning
Reliable Source Isolation of a 23-Tonne Punching Machine Using FAEBI® Rubber Air Springs and Foundation Isolation
Project Overview
Key Facts
- Foundation block weight: 40 tonnes
- Punching machine weight: 23 tonnes
- Project completed within a maximum production downtime of three weeks
Background
There are different types of vibration isolation depending on the application.
Source isolation refers to the vibration-isolated mounting of a machine in order to reduce the vibration energy generated by it. This helps protect the surrounding environment, including nearby machines, building structures and people, from unwanted vibration disturbances.
On the other hand, receiver isolation is used to protect vibration-sensitive machines and equipment from disturbing ground vibrations generated by external sources.
Selecting the correct isolation method is essential for maintaining machine performance while preventing unwanted vibration transmission within the production environment.
The Challenge
For this application, a reliable source isolation solution had to be developed for a 23-tonne punching machine.
The main objective was to prevent vibration disturbances, particularly frequencies starting from approximately 10 Hz, from being transmitted to the neighbouring building.
The project involved several technical and installation challenges, including:
- Extremely limited installation space
- Pentagonal shape of the punching machine
- Requirement to maintain access to the inspection duct through the foundation block
- Very low permissible horizontal movement of the machine
- Maximum permitted production downtime of only three weeks
The isolation system therefore had to provide effective vibration reduction while meeting strict requirements for stability, accessibility and installation time.
The Solution
Bilz developed a foundation isolation system using precast concrete slabs and FAEBI® rubber air springs with automatic level control.
The FAEBI® air springs allow the level of the foundation block to be adjusted whenever load conditions on the foundation change.
By regulating the air pressure inside the air springs, the foundation can be returned to the required operating level while maintaining a high degree of vibration isolation.
When combined with the level control system, the foundation block automatically returns to the predefined target level after load changes.
This provides improved isolation performance while maintaining the stability and position of the machine during operation.
Bilz provided the complete engineering package for the project, including:
- Technical calculations
- Foundation design
- Formwork plans
- Reinforcement drawings
- Steel lists
- Steel bending schedules
Despite the demanding technical requirements and limited installation space, the complete project was successfully completed within the specified three-week production shutdown period.
Effective Combination: FAEBI® and Oscillating Foundations
Bilz has decades of experience in vibration technology and machine foundation isolation.
By combining FAEBI® rubber air springs with oscillating foundation systems, technically reliable and economically practical solutions can be developed for a wide range of industrial applications.
The main benefits include:
- Improved machine precision through receiver isolation
- Protection of the surrounding machine environment through source isolation
- Prevention or reduction of structure-borne noise transmission
- Reduction of vibration amplitudes through additional mass and increased moment of inertia
- Lowering of the overall centre of gravity for improved system stability
- Reduced mechanical stress on electrical components, controls, mounting systems and related equipment
- Improved quality and consistency of results, especially in applications where precise levelling is critical
This combination provides a stable and reliable solution for heavy industrial machines where vibration control, machine stability and operational accuracy are essential.
