Optimal Vibration Isolation for Optical Metrology
Polytec: Laboratory Benches for Laser Vibrometers
Project Overview
Key Facts
- Horizontal natural frequency: 1.2 Hz
- Level reset accuracy: ±0.01 mm
Background
Polytec develops and supplies advanced optical measurement technology for research and industrial applications.
When the company was founded in 1967, it became the first provider of laser-based measurement technology in Germany. Since then, Polytec has grown into an international high-tech company serving customers across industries such as:
- Aerospace
- Medical technology
- Nanotechnology
- Mechanical engineering
- Industrial manufacturing
Polytec measurement systems are used for highly accurate analysis of sensitive production processes, products and technical procedures.
The company has extensive expertise in areas including:
- Vibrometry
- Velocimetry
- Topography
- Process analytics
- Image processing
- Other optical measurement technologies
Headquartered in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Polytec has relied on Bilz vibration isolation solutions for several years.
The Challenge
Laser vibrometers are highly precise measuring instruments used to analyse objects of almost any size.
They perform measurements quickly, without physical contact and without influencing the object being measured.
Laser vibrometers also play an important role in the development of advanced haptic technologies, including haptic displays for smartphones and other technical input devices.
Because these optical instruments operate at very high levels of precision, they must be mounted on highly stable and vibration-isolated laboratory benches.
Even very small external vibrations can interfere with the measurement process and affect the accuracy of surface measurements.
Polytec therefore required a vibration isolation solution that could provide higher isolation efficiency and support the required performance of its precision measuring systems.
The existing solutions were not able to fully meet these requirements, so Polytec commissioned Bilz to develop a customised system.
The Solution
Bilz laboratory benches are specifically designed for the vibration-decoupled operation of highly sensitive equipment, including:
- Measuring instruments
- Testing equipment
- Laser systems
- Optical devices
- Electronic equipment
- Precision weighing systems
- Medical equipment
These laboratory benches are particularly suitable for applications where vibration or changes in level could negatively affect measurements, experiments or other precision work.
Requirements for laboratory benches can vary significantly depending on the application.
For Polytec, Bilz developed a customised laboratory bench with a hard stone tabletop.
The hard stone tabletop provides a highly rigid base and, because of its greater mass, offers improved vibration isolation compared with conventional optical tabletops.
For this static application, the Bilz BiAir® PAS pendulum air spring was selected as the optimum vibration isolator.
BiAir® PAS Vibration Isolation
The highly effective BiAir® PAS membrane air spring isolators protect the measuring system from disturbing vibrations generated by the surrounding environment.
At the same time, the integrated mechanical-pneumatic level control system maintains the required table level even when the load changes.
The system provides a level reset accuracy of approximately ±0.01 mm.
A maintenance unit is also included as part of the system. It is installed upstream to prepare and regulate the compressed air supply required for reliable operation.
From Prototype to Series Production
The prototype developed for Polytec successfully met the required performance criteria and received positive feedback from both Polytec and its end customers.
As a result, these laboratory benches are now produced by Bilz as a series-production solution.
Polytec also uses Bilz vibration-isolated laboratory benches for other precision metrology systems, demonstrating the long-term suitability of the solution across different applications.
Customer Statement
“We have worked with Bilz since 2012. Their good advice and the well-balanced overall product, particularly in terms of performance and cost, have convinced us.”
