Buja Metaal: Effective Source Isolation for a 500-Tonne Press
Project Overview
Key Facts
- Vibration isolation efficiency of more than 90%
Background
Buja Metaal is a Dutch family-owned company that manufactures tooling for production presses as well as machine components for machine builders.
The company has been serving the automotive, heating and household appliance industries since 1980.
When a particularly heavy industrial press was added to the production facility, an effective vibration isolation solution became necessary.
The challenge was not only the large machine weight, but also the limited installation space and the need to reduce vibration transmission to the surrounding area.
The Challenge
Buja Metaal expanded its machine fleet with a new Hursan hydraulic deep-drawing press with a pressing force of 500 tonnes.
The press has approximate dimensions of:
- 3,000 × 1,500 mm
- Machine weight of approximately 80 tonnes
This weight is comparable to around 80 small passenger cars.
However, the machine weight was not the only challenge.
The relatively small installation footprint made it difficult to incorporate conventional vibration isolation measures.
At the same time, effective source isolation was essential because vibrations generated by the press were causing noticeable disturbances in the surrounding area.
A compact yet highly efficient vibration isolation solution therefore had to be developed.
The Solution
Bilz engineers developed a customised vibration isolation solution specifically for the Hursan press.
Because of the very high machine weight, the standard arrangement of four FAEBI® rubber air springs on each side was not sufficient.
Instead, five FAEBI® rubber air springs were installed on each side of the machine.
To create enough space for the additional air springs, the supporting surface of the machine had to be increased.
Bilz therefore designed two specially engineered metal support structures, similar to skids, which were installed beneath the foundation.
These structures extended the machine base and provided the required space for positioning all five air springs on each side.
This approach made it possible to:
- Make optimum use of the limited installation space
- Safely support the extremely heavy machine
- Achieve effective source isolation
- Significantly reduce vibration transmission to the surrounding area
The overall solution convinced Buja Metaal, allowing the project to move quickly from engineering to implementation.
FAEBI® Rubber Air Springs
FAEBI® rubber air springs are highly suitable for both source isolation and receiver isolation applications.
Source Isolation
They can be used for machines that generate high dynamic forces, such as:
- High-speed presses
- Forging hammers
- Heavy industrial machinery
- Other machines and aggregates with strong dynamic disturbance forces
Receiver Isolation
FAEBI® air springs are also suitable for protecting vibration-sensitive equipment, including:
- Measuring machines
- Testing machines
- High-precision machine tools
