Our Solution for an Automotive Plant: Foundation Isolation with Isolation Pad Sets and Lost Formwork
Project Overview
Key Facts
- Foundation block weight: 1,200 tonnes
Background
Indirect vibration isolation of a machine or industrial installation improves the overall rigidity of the system and significantly enhances its dynamic behaviour, especially where large load changes and displacement movements are involved.
For the correct design of a machine foundation, the individual characteristics of the machine must be carefully considered.
Factors such as machine weight, dynamic forces, operating conditions and vibration behaviour play an important role in determining the right foundation and isolation system.
Only after evaluating these parameters can a cost-effective and technically reliable solution be developed for the long-term, uninterrupted operation of the installation.
The Challenge
For certain industrial applications, using only a steel structure or cast-iron plates is not sufficient to achieve the required vibration isolation.
In this project for an automotive manufacturing plant, a specialised foundation solution was required to isolate a milling machine located close to the press plant area.
The objective was to protect the milling operation from surrounding vibrations and prevent vibrations generated by the machine from being transferred to the building structure and surrounding production areas.
The Solution
Bilz implemented a foundation isolation system using isolation pad sets and lost formwork.
Isolation pad sets are particularly suitable for the vibration isolation of heavy machine foundations.
By introducing additional foundation mass and lowering the overall centre of gravity, the system achieved improved vibration isolation efficiency while reducing vibration amplitudes.
This helped minimise the transmission of vibrations and ensured reliable, disruption-free operation of the machine.
Installation of Bilz Insulation Pad Sets
During installation, the Bilz insulation pad sets were positioned beneath the foundation.
The spaces between the insulation pads were filled with mineral fibre insulation panels, which acted as lost formwork.
This arrangement created an effective vibration-isolated foundation capable of supporting the heavy machine while controlling the transmission of dynamic forces.
