AVL engine test bench equipped with the Bilz BiAir® membrane air spring system
More Than 75% Isolation Efficiency
AVL: Reliable and Trouble-Free Operation of Engine Test Benches
Project Overview
Key Facts
- Test speeds ranging from 500 rpm to 10,000 rpm
- Vibration decoupling or isolation efficiency of approximately 75% to 95%
Background
AVL List GmbH is a leading global company specialising in the development, simulation and testing of propulsion systems for the automotive industry and other sectors.
The Austrian company employs more than 11,000 people worldwide and is recognised as one of the leading companies in the testing industry.
AVL has been a long-standing Bilz customer, relying on Bilz vibration isolation solutions for demanding testing applications.
The Challenge
The highly sensitive test benches used by AVL for electric motors and combustion engines require reliable and disturbance-free operation.
In this case, trouble-free operation primarily means minimising unwanted vibrations.
To achieve accurate and repeatable test results, consistent environmental and operating conditions must be maintained throughout the testing process.
AVL therefore required a customised solution for the vibration isolation and decoupling of its test bench plates.
After a detailed technical evaluation and consultation, the BiAir® membrane air spring system was selected as the most suitable solution.
The Solution
Bilz BiAir® membrane air spring systems, with a natural frequency of approximately 2.5 to 3 Hz, are used at AVL for both source isolation and receiver isolation of electric motor and engine test benches.
The system effectively decouples the test bench during operation and helps minimise the transfer of vibrations into the surrounding structure.
This provides several important benefits:
- Reduction of structure-borne noise
- Reduction of structural movement
- Improved stability of the test environment
- More reliable and repeatable test conditions
- Protection of sensitive testing and measurement equipment
BiAir® air springs can also be equipped with either:
- Mechanical level control
- Electro-pneumatic level control
This allows the isolation system to be adapted according to the specific requirements of the test bench and installation.
Results / Highlight
BiAir® air spring systems do not transmit structure-borne noise and can be combined with electro-pneumatic level control for highly accurate and flexible applications.
Their versatile design makes them suitable for a wide range of testing, measurement and precision engineering applications.
