Achieving Test Stand Performance

Published September 23, 2026
Achieving Test Stand Performance

Automotive test stands serve one particular purpose: to allow OEMs to gauge the performance and function of an engine or transmission. Test stands are typically constructed to allow for the replication of various real-world conditions by precisely controlling the speed and torque of the unit under test.

Exhaust Particulate output is an increasingly challenging area for automakers. Engines must meet all emission standards, which have grown more stringent over the years. In some cases, engines will be tested and re-tested after adjustments are made in order to achieve acceptable levels of emissions.

Test stands are a standard part of end-of-production-line test systems at OEM factories, as well as in Research and Development departments. They include both actuators, sensors and data acquisition systems for processing and recording the information needed. This is equipment with a high degree of sensitivity.

To accurately read test results, it’s imperative that the sensors and other equipment operate without distraction from vibration. In order to achieve wholly accurate readings, as well as accept an ever-changing array of engines, automotive test stands are best served by the application of air springs; specifically, low frequency membrane air springs with level control systems.

Sensitive equipment requires careful vibration isolation in order to ensure accurate readings. Though engines can vary by weight and size, utilizing air spring systems with automatic level control will allow for optimal performance with each engine change.

OEMs work hard to produce high quality engines that meet every function and environmental standard. Ensuring that test stands are properly isolated is imperative in evaluating engine performance.
