Modern manufacturing units often keep measuring machines like CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines) directly on the production floor. This helps check parts quickly during production, but it also creates a new problem — vibration.
Machines, cleaning equipment, high-pressure systems and other production activities can create vibrations that affect the accuracy of CMM machines.
Main Factors to Control
For accurate CMM performance, four things are important:
- Temperature
- Humidity
- Sound
- Vibration
Vibration is sometimes difficult to identify, especially before the complete production line is installed and running. If vibration levels are too high, the CMM may not give accurate measurements.
Solution
A vibration site survey can help identify whether vibration is causing the problem.
If vibration levels are high, BiAir air springs or other vibration isolation solutions can be installed to protect the machine, improve measurement accuracy and increase machine life.
Proper vibration isolation is a small investment compared to the cost of expensive measuring equipment.
